  In spite of the intriguing topic and the enticing way that you open it, I just wanted to respond in terms of the nomothetic relation between Adam and the animals (because this is a favorite subject, and I cannot hold back!) Umberto Eco discusses the nomothete (first namer) status of Adam in a fascinating book, "The Search for the Perfect Language," which is a study of how over time and across cultures there have been attempts made to discover a wholistic vehicle of communication, starting with the reasons that this search is mult-disciplinary and highlighting the particular search for the Edenic language, which he concludes . . . . well, I should't spoil it for anyone, right?

Here is a poem by John Hollander (1971) on the subject of naming from the standpoint of essential qualities called "Adam's Task":

Thou, paw-paw-paw; thou, glurd; thou, spotted
Glurd; thou, whitestap, lurching through
The high-grown brush; thou, pliant-footed,
Implex; thou, awagabu.

Every burrower, each flier
Came for the name he had to give:
Gay, first work, ever to be prior,
Not yet sunk to primitive.

Thou, verdle; thou, McFleery's pomma;
Thou; thou; thou - three types of grawl;
Thou, flisket; thou, kabasch; thou, comma-
Eared mashawk; thou, all; thou, all.

Were, in a fire of becoming,
Laboring to be burned away,
Then work, half-measuring, half-humming,
Would be serious as play.

Thou, pambler; thou, rivarn; thou, greater
Wherret, and thous, lesser one;
Thou, sproal; thou, zant; thou, lily-eater.
Naming's over. Day is done.

The epigraph is from Gen. 2:20.

  To further this topic, i'm going to be a little vulnerable here in just a bit.... Some of you know me, in a real-world sense; some will know me, a little better, here. There may be one here who is going to know me, in a sense beyond these mere words....
will i quiet my burgeon needs, try not assuage my hungry heart, not "toor" after novel enchantments...will i allow my disquiet spirit to quiet, long enough to hear what Abba has to say to me, who He has made, saved, and brought to me? I have more on this here later, and in my googleable notes in other places; you will have to search for or wait! More on that Search, or Wait, theme ;)

It is my prayer these words bring you to a better knowing of yourself, and to understanding others. Do you have ears, to hear? Eyes, to see? A heart of flesh, alive and raw, to feel? GOOD!

I imagine that Adam's first task, to "know" the animals, to "husband" the garden and all its inhabitants, to study and NAME THEM ALL according their characters...he had a sense of God from unspoken and unwritten source. From the handiwork of the Creator, Adam surely saw a Creator filled with limitless wonder, One who was pleased placing many surprises in all aspects of His Holy creation, revealing divine intent EVERYWHERE, exposing His own relentless purpose. The task of naming each animal was not a casual, and mindless thing. Adam, the scientist, studied, and named, ALL living things (by some estimates, as many as 100 MILLION different forms, although who is able to count them? This was a longitudinal task; one surely which continues today in the individuation of genetics and discovery, even today, of new life forms-will we do this for eternity? Can a curious mind as yours or mine even imagine such a cool thing?)

According to Gen 2:19 (And out of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air; and brought [them] unto Adam to see what he would call them: and whatsoever Adam called every living creature, that [was] the name thereof.) It seems clear to me, for Adam to know the correct name (nomenclature is based on ATTRIBUTE, CHARACTERISTIC, IDENTITY, and less on role, degree, or function as the Western mind does). Adam, did well; each name he chose was the correct one for that living thing.

Gen 2:20 And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but for Adam there was not found an help meet for him. This is a remarkable passage; ADAM saw the need for a MATE! Undoubtedly (in my admittedly limited purview) Adam saw "mothers and fathers" procreatively cleaving, mating (ostensibly, i believe) each specie for life; each living thing has a God-ordained "helper" (bad word; lexiconic shift aside, go to "Ezer Kenegdo", Heb.)

I imagine a conversation, when Adam first became sentient of his own need for a mate, he approached God, "Daddy, where is MY lover? I see the animals doing this incredible two-backed dance, which results in children; they leave their mother and father, and cling to their mate, and give forth young".
Note what GOD said prior to Adam's first task in (just ONE VERSE after the ONE PROHIBITION) Gen 2:18; "And Jehovah Elohim said, It is not good that Man should be alone; I will make him a helpmate, his like." GOD waited, for Adam to know his need...to see in His created animals and created order how things were to be....before asking him to....WAIT...Adam had apparently ALREADY SOUGHT... "for there was found NONE for him..."

Gen 2:23 And Adam said, This [is] now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman...
Adam, completing his task of naming...
gives his "Ezer Kenegdo" a name...he "knows" her....
BEFORE "KNOWING" her....

Note what he says next in v24 "therefore, i will LEAVE (mother and father)before i CLEAVE" to Eve.
Here is a divergent thought i have been intrigued by; will leave it for now except for the querious (so sue me; i can make up words, too lol) observation; what does Adam know about parents, if not from direct experiential observation in God's FIRST "word" , ie creation?

A healthy cleaving....is predicated on an appropriate leaving...this is a topic worthy of discourse. Many have never had the proper relationship with mother/father; if you don't HAVE a secure/healthy attachment with parent(s), you cannot detach. Seeking prior to detaching (which one cannot do unless one is properly attached) seemingly sets us up to pain and loneliness and woundings deep in our hearts.

And God....said...WAIT, Adam; understand your relationship to me, as My Beloved Son. Trust my provision, and the path through our garden which i have ordered for you. Take a nap; I'll wake you when all is ready.....trust Me.

  Thank you! Great post, Timo! What a history lesson! I think the other "lost" reference is Matthew 19:5 (see also 1 Corinthians 6:16). The "one flesh bond" truly is a spiritual force to be reckoned with, when righteously reclaiming the restoration of the beauty of God-given sexuality, following fornication, divorce, or sexual abuse of any kind (1 Corinthians 6:16).

RE: "Any thoughts on what these cultural mores and inherent biases could cause within society, and how they could shape formation of accepted modern theological teachings?"

Surely there is "nothing new under the sun" (Ecclesiastes 1:9, 10). Today's abortion is yesterday's child sacrifice or vice versa. Excavations of the city of Pompeii, destroyed in 79 A.D. by volcanic eruption, found the city full of pornography. Some think it's harmless to have idols in their homes such as souvenirs from Greece in likenesses of goddesses of fertility, however a demon may be assigned to each one. Seek counsel on the procedure, if you ever endeavor to dispose of those "knickknacks".

Referring to the accounted golden calf incident and the "sound of war" (Exodus 32:17) that Joshua heard arising from the camp as he and Moses were descending the mountain, Moses replied: "It is not the sound of victory, it is not the sound of defeat; it is the sound of singing that I hear." (Exodus 32:18 NIV). Could the sound of war that Joshua first detected have been the low frequency, penetrating, 2/4 time drumbeat - same as the rock beat - used in much of ancient and modern music?

Here is a small sample of quotes retrieved July 31, 2010 from http://christianhelps.org/rockmusic.html:
"Frank Zappa: 'Rock music is sex. The big beat matches the body’s rhythm.'
# Manager of the Rolling Stones: 'Pop music is sex and you have to hit them in the face with it.'
# 'In a sense all rock is revolutionary. By its very beat and sound, it is always implicitly rejecting restraints and it celebrates freedom and sexuality.' (Time Magazine)"

The physiological effects of the rock beat can be as addicting as sex or drugs. "Sex, drugs, and rock and roll" - the correlation has recently been validated with human brain scans. For the skeptic that thinks the rock beat has no physiological effects, try comparing resting blood pressure readings during no music, classical music, or music containing the rock beat [most country, contemporary (regardless of the lyrics, "Christian" or not) , rock, oldies, etc.] .

The glorious good news is that our Lord Jesus does the healing and restoring from all of the enemy's deceptions and snares (Joel 2:25)! "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness" 1 John 1:9.   And not just me, but anyone who tries to be polite to a woman or elder. For some reason in the Pacific Northwest, and other places I'm sure, people equate rudeness with independence. Thank goodness it's not that way where I live now.

  It is very good to hear that some people are still teaching their children to be polite. I was raised to be polite myself, and when I was living in the Pacific Northwest, some people actually ridiculed me or got angry when I tried to be kind or polite. At least some people have not forgotten common courtesy and respect.
